Every maori are tattooed. The moko make the warrior drawing for the woman. The tattoo begin at puberty with rites and ritual ceremonies. Instruments used are : bone chisel, age of saw teeth or straight edge and sharp.

In the maori mythology, the tatoo beginning with a love story between a man who called Mataora and a princess of darkness who called Niwareka. One day, Mataora struck Niwareka. Niwareka fled for join the kingdom of his father Uetonga. Mataora is heartbroken and search the princess. When he find her, he request forgiveness. She accepts anf her father offers to Mataora education of the tattoo art.
